Why free software?

without comments

It has occured to me that some of you, after seeing the changes I’ve made to my website, might be wondering: What is this free software stuff and why should I care? Others may be saying to themselves: Where are all the pictures of the beautiful Argentine women he’s always talking about? Still others may be looking for Matt Dorn, standout outside linebacker for Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. (That bastard shows up all over the place when you do a search for “Matt Dorn” on Google.)

At any rate, for some time I’ve been wanting to lay out in some coherent form the reasons why I’ve developed such an interest in free software, particularly given that focusing on free software could have negative consequences for my career. (My most relevant work experience is with Microsoft technologies, and it’s going to be a tough sell trying to do anything exclusively with free software once I start pounding the pavement again.) At any rate, I’ve ended up writing a fairly lengthy article in which I examine my work history and show how that experience led to a fascination with information technology and subsequently an interest in free software.
